Two GSPs Surrendered Together, Rescued Together: Rolfy & Belly's Heartwarming Tale

Bringing a German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) into your home is rewarding. But what about adding two? That's a whole new level of adventure! At California GSP Rescue, we found Rolfy and Belly. This bonded pair shares a story that reveals the joys and challenges of owning a couple of high-energy dogs.

They started their journey at a local animal shelter. Their previous owners, though sad, knew they couldn’t care for them anymore. Amy and Joe, former adopters, were moved by their situation. They acted fast and pulled them out of the shelter. Their compassion is a testament to the power of community in rescue work. We are incredibly grateful for their swift response.

Rolfy and Belly's story speaks to those overwhelmed by their two active dogs. They were likely surrendered because their energy and prey drive proved too much to handle. Amy and Joe saw that these two are really loving and clever. Still, their energy and high prey drive can make them challenging to handle on a leash. This can be a common issue with GSP’s known for their boundless energy and hunting instincts.

The Reality of Two Active GSP’s: Double the Work, Double the Time

It's a common misconception that two dogs will exercise and train each other. While they may play together, they do not replace the need for individual training and exercise. In fact, their combined energy can create a more challenging environment. Two GSP’s can require a considerable amount of work and time compared to one.

  • Increased Exercise Needs: Two GSP’s require significantly more exercise than one. They need both physical and mental stimulation to prevent destructive behavior and anxiety.

  • Training Challenges: Training two dogs simultaneously can be difficult. They may distract each other, making it harder to establish commands and obedience.

  • Amplified Prey Drive: As demonstrated by Rolfy and Belly, their prey drive becomes even more intense when together.

Why Rolfy and Belly Need a Special Home:

We hope to keep this bonded pair together. They clearly adore each other, and their bond is heartwarming. We need to put their well-being first. They should go to a home that can meet their needs.

  • Experienced Owners: Their perfect home would be with someone who knows how to handle active GSP’s. They should also have experience managing multiple dogs.

  • Regular training: They need consistent, positive training to manage their prey drive and boost recall.

  • Adequate Exercise: A big, fenced yard or a safe off-leash area is essential. Long lines and recall training are crucial for their safety and well-being.

  • Commitment: Adopting two active GSP’s is a significant commitment. Potential adopters must be prepared to dedicate time and resources to their care.
