Teal

Teal didn't show up at a shelter like the other dogs California GSP Rescue saves. He was dropped off at a Vet's office, where the owner had requested him to be put to sleep. Fortunately for Teal, someone in the Vet's office reached out to a friend who then reached out to California GSP Rescue.

Teal's owner was moving and was unable to take his dog with him. Sometime before moving, the owner had found a family to take Teal, and the family made arrangements to pick up their new family member a few days before the owner was moving. However, the family had second thoughts and called the day they had planned to pick up Teal, a few days before Teal's owner was to leave town, letting the owner know they had changed their mind.

The family's decision may have been because of Teal's limp. Which we would later learn was a suspected torn anterior cruciate ligament or ACL. An injury that is not uncommon in the athletic German Shorthaired Pointers. Depending on what Vet they asked, the surgery could cost several thousand dollars. Teal was no longer the "free" dog they had expected to adopt. Less than 48 hours before his move, Teal's owner, faced with few options, decided to have Teal euthanized.

This situation isn't uncommon. The majority of visitors to the shelter are not looking to adopt a dog needing costly medical surgery. Most injured dogs picked up as strays by animal control, if not deemed unadoptable and euthanized immediately, are labeled "rescue only."

Fortunately for Teal, the owner took him to a Vet's office that works with rescues. Nikki, who works at the Vet's office, contacted Linda, someone she knew that rescues. Linda knew California GSP Rescue was a breed-specific rescue and reached out to see if they could assist.

Unlike visitors to shelters or someone looking for a "free" dog, California GSP Rescue doesn't shy away from German Shorthaired Pointers needing medical attention. Volunteers immediately made arrangements with Nikki to meet and pick up Teal. The volunteer was amazed that someone would euthanize a dog that was so sweet!

Teal is now safe with California GSP Rescue. He'll be seeing Dr. Kang and getting the surgery he needs very soon. We'll keep everyone posted on the surgery and recovery. If you are interested in helping cover the cost of the surgery, please click here to make a small donation.
