Swanson Is Safe!

Swanson

'Tis the season for giving, as in giving up one's dog. For as long as California GSP Rescue has existed, there has been an unofficial season that ranges from sometime just after Halloween and goes until the New Year. The season can be overwhelming for Animal Shelters and Rescues as adoptions tend to wane during this same period. Swanson showed up at a local Humane Society just before the season started and was adopted. A week before Thanksgiving, Swanson's adopter returned him to the Humane Society.

Swanson is a beautiful young male lemon Pointer. His kennel card read that he was three years old, but he looked younger. Sitting in his kennel, he would get more looks than many other dogs waiting patiently to be adopted. His adopter, in all likelihood unfamiliar with sporting breeds, must have thought they had hit the jackpot finding a purebred Pointer up for adoption. His adopter was about to get a crash course about sporting breeds at an expense.

A week before Thanksgiving, Swanson showed back up at the shelter. His adopter stated Swanson had escaped the yard and was hit by a car. Whether it was being afraid of Swanson's medical expenses, or the realization Swanson needed more than the adopter could provide, his adopter declined to keep him. The good news is that Swanson's injuries were minor compared to what they could have been, and the Humane Society was able to provide him the medical attention he needed.

Not wanting to make the same mistake twice, the Humane Society reached out to California GSP Rescue to see if they could assist. While their adoption rates were better than most local shelters, they too had few open kennels and felt Swanson would be better off with a rescue that would place him with someone familiar with the breed.

The ask came late in a busy week. Before responding, CA GSP Rescue sent an email to Volunteer David to see if he could help transport. David was more than happy to help save Swanson and get him one step to his forever home - a home familiar with the breed. He picked him up and met another volunteer. Swanson was safe.

While California GSP Rescue is dedicated to rescuing and placing German Shorthaired Pointers, they will also help other similar sporting breeds. Finding a home that can exercise and manage Swanson is the same type of home capable of handling a German Shorthaired Pointer. California GSP Rescue will continue to evaluate Swanson over the next few weeks to find the best forever home for him.

If you are active and think you might be an ideal home for Swanson, we invite you to submit an application from our website. If you are interested in volunteering like David and helping make a difference, visit California GSP Rescue's Volunteer page.
