Scout Is Adopted!

Jon and Scout

Jon applied for a young GSP that he could share his active lifestyle with. He was not new to the breed. He hunted with his brother’s GSP, and now wanted a companion and adventure buddy of his own. He had been looking for a long time, and knew exactly what a young GSP would need. Plenty of training, exercise, daily stimulation, and love.

Scout had come to us as an owner surrender from someone who was no longer able to give Scout the time and exercise he needed, and he was becoming anxious. We committed to take him and find him the right home with someone who could meet Scouts needs. And boy did we! We couldn’t be more thrilled for both Jon and Scout, now known as Bodie.

“Hello GSP Family!

Scout, who is now Bodie (because he has a heart of Gold), has been my greatest source of Joy in the last 2 months since he's adopted me into his pack!

I remember my adoption day, waiting for Greg to bring him out of the kennel to meet me for the first time. I was trying to keep my emotions in check, but I remember as he first came bounding through the gate, a small tear in my eye forming thinking this could be MY dog!

Greg was absolutely amazing with showing me how to handle him. I was shocked by how well he responded to both my commands and Greg’s as we went on a short introduction walk. Each step of the way pinching myself not believing this amazing dog could be part of my family soon!

Huge shoutout to Teri! Where do I begin!? What an angel of a human, I feel she took the time to learn about me and help find me a companion that would fit my active lifestyle. I've never met her, only through our phone conversations, but through our talks she was so confident that she had the perfect dog for me! She followed up the day after our adoption as well as other times to make sure everything is going great with Bodie! I can't thank her enough and every volunteer at GSP Rescue for everything you do to find this amazing breed forever homes!

It's been over 2 months now since I've adopted Bodie, and he's accepted me as the leader of his Pack! I've taken him on various hikes throughout Southern California, as we train for a backpacking trip later this Spring. He's been down to visit boats, played in the snow in Lake Arrowhead, and has met just about every dog out walking in our neighborhood. I now know what it's like to have one of the most elite dog breeds in the world, as I'm stopped at least 2-3 times a week asking if he's a GSP and how well behaved and beautiful he is. And then comes the story of said neighbor telling me about their connection to the breed, always with smiles on their faces and I imagine lots of joy in their hearts!

We walk/run/hike 2-4 miles each day, with some days longer if we do more hiking. Protecting the avocado tree from the squirrels is his primary job around the house! I would normally lose between 1-2 avocados a day to squirrels, but since Bodie has been on duty, I've only lost 2 in 2 months! We work on obedience training each and every walk as well as recall and getting him started on birds. While I've always known GSP's were smart, it's been so amazing to see how fast he picks up new commands, and continues to want to work hard!

If there is one word that has resonated with me during the last 2 months with Bodie, it is PATIENCE! While we as a society are becoming more demanding with the speed at which things are completed and perfection, I'm reminded daily that it will take time, love, understanding, consistency and patience while Bodie continues to adjust to his new life. I won't wake up one morning with the sun and Bodie as the perfectly trained dog I see in all the videos, it will happen in the right time and it's my job to provide him with the steps along the way to continue bringing out his best! And that's our agreement to each other and to everyone at CA GSP Rescue, let's give each other our Best! I know he gives it to me each and every day with his love, cuddles and ‘Cado protection, and I owe it to him and everyone in our GSP family as well.

While both Bodie and his master are far from perfect in this world, he is the Perfect dog for me!

I feel so honored to have been chosen by CA GSP Rescue to give Bodie his new life, and getting to join your GSP family, I know it's my duty to be the best Dog Dad I can be! I'm forever grateful for CA GSP Rescue, Teri, Greg and everyone I hope to someday meet helping pair us together! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for welcoming me into the GSP family”!
