Frankie Is Safe!
Sometimes California GSP Rescue partners with other rescues to help save dogs, which is what happened with Frankie. He showed up as a stray at a remote animal shelter that Erika, from One Dane At A Time, frequently visits. Together with Erika, we coordinated transportation to get Frankie from the animal shelter to California GSP Rescue. However, the day Erika packed everything she needed and prepared to leave for the animal shelter, she found out that a private party had adopted Frankie.
These things happen, and California GSP Rescue considers it good that a German Shorthaired Pointer is safe. The only concern is that the adopter can assess, manage, and provide for the rescued GSP. We can only hope they contact California GSP Rescue if they are unable. Frankie's adopter didn't.
A few weeks after Frankie had been adopted, he showed back up at the same animal shelter. A little surprised, but not unusual, adopters unfamiliar with the breed are often overwhelmed when they get a GSP home. Remember Aurora? She was adopted from the shelter and then returned.
With Frankie back at the shelter, Erika made plans a second time to pick him up and transport him to California GSP Rescue. While at the animal shelter, she inquired why Frankie's adopter returned him. The Animal Control Officer looked into the notes and saw that the adopter had said he had had a seizure. A seizure?!? The adopter hadn't provided any medical records to the shelter, and he had been at the animal shelter a significant amount of time without showing any health issues. Had the adopter exaggerated or fabricated a diagnosis? California GSP Rescue didn't give the reason a second thought. Dr. Kang would see and assess Frankie.
While all the plans were being made for Frankie, Erika asked for assistance with Walter, a dog she planned to get out of a local shelter. Walter was an old Sharpei who had been red-listed - a list of dogs the animal shelter could euthanize at any time. He couldn't hear, his eyesight was going, and no one was interested in adopting him from the animal shelter. Walter's time was up.
Erika asked if California GSP Rescue could get Walter from the shelter and meet her to trade dogs. She already had a foster for Walter, but didn't know if she would make it to the animal shelter before closing. Knowing Walter was a Senior Dog out of time, the decision was easy.
On the way to meet Erika, the volunteer stopped by the shelter to pick up Walter. It was the end of the day near closing time, but the animal control officer was expecting the volunteer to pick up Walter and didn't waste any time. She brought him out. The volunteer loaded him up and took off to meet Erika to get Frankie.
A short time later, the California GSP Rescue volunteer met Erika. Both Frankie and Walter were safe and one step closer to their forever home. However, more to Frankie's story would unfold over the next couple of weeks.
