Rescuing Pearl: A Tale of Hope and Compassion

Danetta, a volunteer at an organization that works closely with the local shelter, reached out to California GSP Rescue because a young German Shorthaired Pointer that had been picked up as a stray had not been adopted even after sitting for two weeks. This was unusual since the partnering organization typically places most animals in their care and only reaches out to rescues when they have trouble finding a home for a dog. At first, California GSP Rescue did not expect to be asked for assistance since the GSP had only been at the organization for a short period. So, what had changed?

Pearl was a young German Shorthaired Pointer that had shown up as a stray at the local shelter. Amazingly, no one came to claim her, and the Animal Shelter transferred her to the SPCA - the organization they partnered with to reduce the number of animals euthanized. She was kept there for a couple of weeks with no one interested in adopting her. The SPCA was challenged the same as the local shelters and rescues; more dogs were coming in than being adopted. Kennel space was in high demand.

When Volunteer Lisa was asked to help, she didn't waste any time making arrangements to get Pearl. She knew the dangers of leaving any dog in a shelter too long after being asked for assistance. Early that following Saturday, Volunteer Lisa headed to rescue Pearl. Lisa had picked up many dogs from shelters in the past and was always amazed when first meeting GSP’s like Pearl, asking herself, "who doesn't come to claim a dog like this?!?"

Pearl pulled at the leash on her freedom walk. Overwhelmed with the new sites and smells of the outdoors she had been deprived of the past few weeks. She was on her way to a new life and one step closer to a forever home.

California GSP Rescue is an all-volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to helping German Shorthaired Pointers and reducing the number of dogs euthanized at animal shelters. We rely on the time of our volunteers, the commitment of our adopters, and the support of the Rescue Heroes to continue our work. You can make a difference in many ways, from adopting and giving a forever home to a GSP in need, to becoming a Rescue Hero and helping support our organization financially with a small monthly donation.
