Philly Is Adopted!

Philly with Nicole and Dave

Philly, a 6-month-old female German Shorthaired Pointer was dumped by her owner with her three littermates alongside a road. Thankfully, a concerned citizen picked up the four pups and contacted the local shelter. On the day Philly and her siblings were made available to rescue, we got them to safety, got them vetted to prepare them for adoption.

Philly, being a young GSP puppy, we were looking for someone for Philly who had experience, and knowledge of the energy of this breed, and was willing and able to manage, train and exercise a GSP puppy.

Nicole and Dave applied to the rescue to adopt a puppy after they tragically lost their 5 year old Vizsla and enjoyed the active breed.  Nicole and Dave had the knowledge of what it takes to manage a young GSP and were looking for a puppy. Nicole saw a video of Philly and inquired about her, and after discussion with their adoption counselor, Mariann, Nicole and Dave decided to come out and meet with her.

“In November of 2022, we tragically lost our Vizsla to an aggressive form of Cancer called MCT. We were devastated, Fin had been a very healthy and active boy and only 5 ½ years old. It was brutal and it happened so suddenly that we were left with so much pain and empty hearts. Our home was so quiet and after a few weeks of tears and holding each other, we started thinking about another Vizsla but it would be several months until the breeders would have puppies, and even then, if they were going to have one to offer as a pet.

We always loved GSP’s and got to thinking about rescuing rather than buying. We found CA GSP Rescue and were blown away by the number of dogs available for adoption. Many of the stories were pretty sad and we couldn’t believe how so many people poorly treat dogs or get a breed they can't handle. We saw adorable Philly and watched the video about her and her litter mates and were so touched that we wanted to meet her.

We drove out to meet Philly and immediately knew she was for us. She was so sweet and we could see in her that she would be a wonderful and smart GSP.

GSP’s are not for everyone. They are beautiful dogs, but come equipped with a super high amount of energy that if goes ignored, they become destructive. These are highly intelligent sporting dogs, they need a job and they need to be with their owners. We live a lifestyle that is perfect for the breed. We both work from home and live active lifestyles. This is not a breed to be kept in a crate all day while the owners are at work. They require a lot of exercise, mental stimulation, and love.

We named Philly, Lilly and after being with us for over a month, she is doing fantastic! She is eager to learn and has more than the basic commands down. Lilly loves to go on hikes and play fetch with Dad, play with other GSP’s, and do agility with Mom. She loves agility so much that she will nap in the tunnel! She is a fast runner and we love watching her zoom around the yard. Lilly will soon be learning nose work. We used to do this activity with our former Vizsla and he loved it. It’s a perfect job for them because it taps into what they were bred to do, hunt.

We are beyond thankful to CA GSP Rescue and all the volunteers. You all care so deeply and it shows. We love having silly Lilly in our lives and watching her thrive with the life we are giving her. She is so sweet, and loving, and has fully come out of her shell!

Thanks again”!
