Penny Is Safe
We don't know if Penny escaped from an enclosure, her yard, or if her owner dumped her, but we do know that she ran loose for a couple of months. Afraid, she would run from anyone approaching her. No one could catch her. Finally, after many weeks of scavenging for food, a kind soul was able to capture her. Malnourished and full of ticks, the shelter took Penny in. No one had been looking for a lost GSP that had at least one litter. After the shelter held her the mandatory holding period, the shelter reached out to California GSP Rescue.
California GSP Rescue has many years of experience working with shy and timid dogs and readily agreed to assist. German Shorthaired Pointers are a resilient breed, and GSP’s, like Penny, need a gentle hand for training and someone to give the love they need. Confident California GSP Rescue could find the right forever home; transportation arrangements were made from the small outlying shelter. As an all-volunteer organization, we rely not only on our volunteers but, when available, the assistance of shelter volunteers. Fortunately, there were a couple of shelter volunteers that could assist.
Early one morning, after making arrangements with the shelter manager, Laura left the shelter with Penny. With the assistance of Angelika, she had made prior arrangements to meet David. Penny rode well. She seemed comfortable being transported; however, she wasn't sure about being changed from one vehicle to another. Laura and David took care when moving her from one car to another. It's a good practice always to use a leash and helping to prevent a dog from getting loose. Safely in David's truck, David set off to meet the last leg of Penny's journey.
Late morning, David pulled into a parking lot and waited for Greg to arrive a few minutes later. Even though transported in a crate in the back of his truck, Penny was warming up to David. She seemed to know that he was taking her to a good place. David took the same care as he had when he helped move Penny from Laura's car to his when moving Penny to Greg's car. While timid and unsure, she was an absolute love and one step closer to her forever home.
Special thanks to Volunteer Abbie for sending one of the first emails to California GSP Rescue, letting us know of a GSP in need. Angelika for helping make the arrangements to transport Penny. Adoption coordinator Luis, for seeing she could be picked up early for the transport. Laura for transporting her the first leg, David for transporting the second leg, and Greg for getting her to the California GSP Rescue. Thank you to the Rescue Heroes, whose monthly donations allow us to rescue dogs like Penny and care for them while we look for their forever homes.
Update: Penny was recently spayed and is coming out of her shell. She seems to get along well with other well-socialized dogs; however, she is initially uncertain of new dogs, just like with humans.
