Penny Is Safe
When we learned about Penny, she was listed on NextDoor in the "free" section. The family had gotten her from a Craigslist ad the day before and realized that she was a hunting dog and needed much more exercise and training than they could give. Also, she enjoyed chasing the cats. They finished the post, "our cats don't want to be chased anymore and we don’t want to have to take her to the shelter."
Volunteer Jean had reached out to Marylin, who reached out to us to see if we could assist. We got back to Jean, letting her know we could help. However, when Jean reached out to the owners, they had taken Penny to the shelter. So much for not wanting to take her to the shelter...
Jean immediately reached out to the shelter, letting them know that California GSP Rescue would take Penny. She made arrangements with the shelter to pick up Penny and transport her the first leg meeting Volunteer Betsy. Betsy would then drive Penny the next leg and a little closer to California GSP Rescue, and Penny's forever home. Volunteer Greg would take Penny the last leg arriving back home after sunset.
Penny was lucky, but other dogs given away on Craigslist are not. Some can end up in not-so-good situations or, like Penny, at the local animal shelter. Not all dogs have adopters or rescues willing or waiting to pick them up. They will be held a certain amount of time and, if not adopted, put to sleep.
We have since learned that Penny is a sweet girl, and while she needs exercise, she isn't off the charts with the amount of playtime she needs. We've since learned that she gets along well with other well-socialized dogs but not cats! California GSP Rescue got her spayed and will continue to evaluate her to see what qualified applicants would be a good match. If you are interested, please submit an application on our website.
A big thanks to Volunteer Jean for reaching out to Rescue and the owner who posted her on NextDoor. A special thanks to Jean and Betsy for helping transport Penny one step closer to California GSP Rescue and her forever home. You'll learn more about Penny as we continue to evaluate her, but if you are interested in adopting, please apply.
