Maverick

California GSP Rescue was notified about a female GSP in a local shelter that had Demodex. When we inquired about her, we were told someone had called and was coming to get her later that day. When we followed up, the little girl had been adopted by the person that had called; however, a male German Shorthaired Pointer was available and needed medical attention. We asked for more details on the male and his medical needs.

Maverick had shown up with another dog as strays. However, the shelter suspected the person that found Maverick might have been his owner that didn't want to pay his Vet bill for the procedure he needed. Maverick had two cherry eyes or a prolapsed nictitating membrane. In addition, he needed to be neutered. Relinquishing him into the shelter to the shelter was a much easier and less costly solution.

A volunteer from California GSP Rescue showed up at the shelter to meet and examine Maverick. Maverick was young and full of energy. He ran around the play field, enjoying the open area. Some GSP owners who didn't research the breed aren't prepared for this type of energy, and do not have the resources or time needed to give the dogs the exercise they need. Was this why the family gave him up?

His two cherry eyes didn't concern us as much as it may have worried the original owner. California GSP Rescue knew the cherry eyes could be fixed with a minor surgery during his neuter. The surgery cost would add a few hundred dollars to the cost of his neuter. Combining the surgery with the neuter would be an economical way of seeing Maverick received the medical attention he needed.

After evaluating him, the California GSP Rescue volunteer let the shelter know we would take him. He was good natured with a good demeanor. Finding a home after he had his surgery would not be as difficult as when he had the cherry eye. We were confident we could help him and find him a forever home. Maverick was safe.

A big thanks to the Rescue Heroes, whose monthly giving helps us commit to taking dogs from the shelter. While the funds do not always cover all the expenses, the regular donations help us feel more confident about taking in an animal needing additional surgery and raising the extra funds.
