In Loving Memory Of Gray

Gray

The majority of German Shorthaired Pointers rescued are being given up by someone that didn't have the time to give their dog. In some cases, without enough exercise and attention, the dogs develop bad habits like going over fences. What seems an insurmountable obstacle by someone that doesn't have enough time to dedicate to their GSP are investments of time by others that pay off in dividends of love from their new family member. Gray was one of those dogs whose owner didn't have the time to give him the attention he needed. Fortunately, Gray was relinquished to California GSP Rescue who later found an amazing family to adopt him. We cannot say enough good things about Ron, Peggy, and their family for giving Gray his forever home. They recently lost Gray and wrote the following memorial for him.

“When my husband Ron reached out to Greg at the rescue about adopting a running buddy and family dog, Greg helped pick the perfect one for us; Gray.

Gray was 6 years old, a little timid and underweight. He had a few scars on his hind legs and one large scar underneath his neck most likely from previously being chained out. His previous owner said he was an escape artist and could jump a 6 foot wall or fence and boy could he run!

It was love at first sight for Gray and our family! He wanted to please us and really listened to everything we said to him. He was a cuddle bug, a leaner, and had no respect for personal space.  He had to be in the middle of everything, whether it was watching football, on the bed, or tinkering on something under the jeep. He was the destroyer of all stuffed animals and squeaker toys and my constant shadow (when Ron wasn’t around). He hated the rain and the hose. He didn’t lick and hardly ever barked. He loved everyone and everyone loved him. His coat was so soft you couldn’t help playing with his ears and he loved ear and butt scratches and laying on top of you. He loved our kids and had a way of knowing when our daughter needed a cuddle, a laugh or help with her homework. We were pleasantly surprised when we joined our brother-in-law bird hunting with his dog and Gray knew exactly what to do! He loved the hunt!

Gray went everywhere with us, and always wanted to be touching us. Any time I was in the car Gray was looking over my shoulder, looking out the front from between the seats or hanging his head out the window. When we took the jeep out to go rock climbing Gray was right there with us. He loved us well and loved being with us no matter what we were doing.

In his last few years his vision started to go but his nose was stronger than ever and he didn’t miss out on much. He loved to sit in the back yard, soak up the sun and “look” over the neighborhood. He became a master at napping.

There’s not a day that goes by that we don’t miss him. I’m so glad I have lots of pictures and videos with our sweet boy to keep the memories alive.

I have started to volunteer at the rescue and hope someday Gray will point us to another that will help ease the emptiness we feel without him. We can’t thank Greg and the others at the GSP rescue enough for giving us our best dog ever.
