Abbie is Adopted!
Abbie, a gorgeous 10 year old GSP came to us when her owner could no longer care for her as he needed to go into a retirement living situation and did not have a plan for Abbie’s future should something like this happen.
Abbie was adopted fairly quickly and shortly returned as the couple stated she was too deaf for them and they were unable to control her on a leash and she was too picky with her food choices. She is 10!!!
Thankfully, Tabby and Donovan, being previous adopters, applied to the rescue to adopt a dog of any age as long as the dog got along with the family. Tabby, being an avid walker, wanted a dog that would accompany her on daily walks. It was also important to them that the dog enjoyed going on RV trips as the family likes taking longer trips in their RV.
Having previous GSP experience with both younger and older dogs, Tabby and Donovan just wanted a dog that “fit.” Needless to say, Tabby and Donovan have not reported her as being too deaf or uncontrollable!
Here is what they did say:
“We are happy to bring sweet Abbie into our home. She has some challenges with being a little older, but her personality and energy levels are something seen in much younger dogs. She is our 4th GSP and we absolutely love the breed. We had previously adopted Sully from the GSP rescue back in 2012 and he had unfortunately passed away in early 2021.
We get asked all the time why we would adopt a dog like Abbie (meaning her being almost 12 years old) and our answer is simple. Senior dogs need a good home just as much as younger dogs. Although they can’t offer many years, those they can offer you are much more precious because they know time is limited. When looking at adopting a GSP, you need to be conscious of their energy levels as they are difficult to manage. For anyone curious about the breed but not sure about the high energy levels, we recommend an older dog…..a nice long walk and they usually go to sleep for the next hour or two so in a way they’re easier to manage than a puppy.
She enjoys regular trips to the pet store where she picks out her own toy or chew bone. Abbie loves taking her kids to school and picking them up in the car. She also tends to get a little sassy with mom whenever her routine is interrupted (she is a 2 walk a day girl). We took her to the beach, and she acted like a puppy again. She really is a great dog, and we are happy to adopt her”.
