Hoku Is Adopted!

Hoku with Miho, Victor and Bonapart

2020 was a very different year. When Hoku showed up at the shelter, everyone thought if her owner didn't claim her, she would be adopted the first day she was made available. She wasn't. When she was made available, she was given twenty-four hours because of her injuries she sustained from being hit by a car. California GSP Rescue rescued her, got her the medical attention she needed, and found her an amazing home one year ago today. Read Miho and Victor's one year update and you'll know why we love them, and knew they were the perfect home for Hoku!

It will be Hoku’s one-year adoption anniversary/gotcha day on Jan 24th. We feel like we have known her forever but it has been only one year!

Hoku is doing so well and giving us so much joy every day. We want to send our gratitude on her anniversary, and write a little about her and her life since she joined our family.

Before we found Hoku, we found CA GSP Rescue on Facebook. We had been really enjoying their posts and FB lives since my husband, Victor, loves GSP’s and I heard so many great memories of GSP’s that he had in the past.

We were told that Hoku was found as a stray on July 4th 2020, and she had multiple bone fractures from 2 car accidents. She was almost put down at the shelter, and her broken front right leg was going to be amputated, but CA GSP Rescue saved her life by getting her from the shelter while the clock was ticking and Dr. Kang saved her leg. Thank you, CA GSP Rescue and Dr. Kang so much for saving her! And also, we really appreciate all of you who supported her with donations and love through the process from the surgery to the recovery.

When we saw Hoku for the first time on Facebook live, her front right leg was in the cast. She reminded us of Hunter, Victor’s GSP, who passed away a few years back. He had 3 ½ legs due to a birth defect. When we applied for Hoku’s adoption, she wasn’t ready since she still needed further medical attention, which CA GSP Rescue took care of, which was very impressive. (At that time, we adopted Bonaparte who was then called Fudge from CA GSP Rescue).

For Victor, Hoku is his 4th GSP and his 9th pointer. (His 8th is Bonaparte whom we adopted earlier from CA GSP Rescue) For me, Hoku is my 2nd pointer.

My mother-in-law who lives with us loves GSP’s since she had one before and adored him. Both Bonaparte and Hoku are very sweet to her.

Despite her horrible experience; Hoku is so vital and sweet and her tail is always wagging. She loves going for a walk, playing with Bonaparte, playing fetch, and hunting in the bushes. She loves snuggling with us. She plays hard and sleeps hard, lol. We had a cat named Tuesday when we adopted her, and Hoku got used to Tuesday very quickly.

When Hoku came to us, we knew she was still traumatized from her car accident because she was very scared of cars driving by on our walks, and she was very skittish with a sudden sound. She chewed lots of things, like blankets, toys, plants, and the rotten wood fence (so we put up a new fence.)  Oh, I have to say she has not chewed any dog beds! Good girl.

She loves to go hiking and run on the beach, although she sometimes starts limping on her right hip after she plays too much because her hip was broken from the accident. So we monitor her activity to balance her energy and her physical condition at the same time.

We wanted to soothe her, and we have been talking to her, singing with her, and I have been meditating with her every day.

During the early days of the adoption of Hoku, Greg and Teri were always available to talk to, which was very very helpful and thoughtful. Thank you.

One year later now, she is doing so well, wagging her tail all the time. She goes to Victor when he leaves for work and comes back home. She goes to her grandma and enjoys getting petted. She plays with Bonaparte so hard. She snuggles with me and takes a nap. We walk together every morning and night. The dog blankets are getting no more holes.

She gives us so much joy every day.

Thank you CA GSP Rescue so much for giving us the opportunity to know Hoku, and thank you for your dedication and care for those beautiful GSPs.

Warm regards,

Miho with Victor, Pat (grandma), Bonaparte, and Hoku
