Beans' Journey to Freedom: A GSP's Inspiring Rescue Story

Beans was one of the half-dozen GSP’s who showed up at a shelter in Southern California around the Fourth of July. She was noticed at a local shelter when California GSP Rescue was alerted about another dog at the same shelter. The shelter's image was of a thin, solid liver GSP that looked confused and lost.

The shelter had picked up Beans as a stray a few days before the holiday weekend, and she was placed in a kennel with a few other dogs in hopes her owner would claim her before the stray dogs from the fireworks arrived. As we have mentioned, the Fourth of July is a particularly distressing time for stray dogs, and they must not stay at a shelter for any longer than necessary.

What made Bean's situation more concerning was that she wasn't doing well, and being in an unfamiliar place filled with dogs barking added to her stress. She wasn't eating, and she developed a cough. These would be factors the shelter would consider if she wasn't claimed or adopted and they needed to make room. California GSP Rescue had reached out to the shelter's rescue team to communicate and let them know that, even though they were expecting the annual increase in intakes after the fireworks, they could help.

After no one came to claim Beans, and no one adopted her, California GSP rescue, with their unwavering dedication, made plans to rescue her. The day would be busy, but they were determined. Beans would be one of three dogs rescued that day, a testament to the relentless efforts of the rescue team.

Beans was overjoyed to walk out the shelter's front door, finally free from the stress of waiting for someone to claim her and the constant barking of the other dogs. She was loaded into the truck's back seat and immediately settled in as if she knew she was going somewhere better. Her relief was real; it was a moment of triumph for everyone involved in her rescue.

Since being rescued, California GSP Rescue has been putting some weight on her. Her appetite improved as she got better from the kennel cough and got used to the daily routine. Once she became more comfortable in her new surroundings, her GSP personality began to appear. Her interest included anything that fluttered or moved in the backyard and where her foster people were. She enjoyed the morning walk with the other dogs before breakfast and the opportunity to hunt rabbits and squirrels. She was all GSP and now just needed a forever home.

Even though Beans is four years old, she is still quite active and might not be a dog for everyone. She still needs that morning walk. If you think Beans might be the right dog for you, please submit an adoption application to begin the process. If you cannot adopt Beans, you can still help by sharing Bean's story or by becoming a Rescue Hero
