Felix: Stray, Adopted, Returned, Rescued
Felix, a young, energetic German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP), found himself in a crowded shelter, his future uncertain. Yet, he stood strong, a beacon of resilience amidst the chaos of barking dogs all seeking a loving home. His story is one of hope, a testament to the potential of every rescue dog, and the power of human compassion.
California GSP Rescue strongly advocates adopting from rescues and shelters, as it can bring immense joy and fulfillment to both the dog and the adopter. Felix is a living testament to this. His story is one of resilience, hope, and the power of human compassion. However, it's important to consider the unique needs of each dog and your lifestyle. Some dogs at the shelters are unknown, and while many might be able to manage them, others might not. Take Felix, for example. He's an excellent dog for the right family, but not all families.
Felix, a typical young, nice-looking, purebred German Shorthaired Pointer received some attention and was eventually adopted. However, his return to the shelter due to compatibility issues in a multi-dog home highlighted the crucial importance of understanding a dog's social dynamics and needs. This knowledge is key to responsible dog ownership and ensuring a successful adoption.
It isn't unusual for rescued dogs to take several days or weeks to settle into a new environment. Each house will be different, and the more elements (other dogs, children, cats, etc.), the longer it can take for a new dog to adjust. It's best when a knowledgeable person can manage the dog to avoid any potential triggers or situations in which a new dog might react. That's where adopting from a reliable rescue can make a difference.
After Felix was returned, the shelter thought he was suffering from kennel stress. He became more reactive to other dogs—dogs that hadn't bothered him in the past now became an issue. The shelter, faced with few options, reached out to rescue.
Fortunately, they contacted Robin with NorCal GSP Rescue asking for help. However, there wasn't much time, and Robin didn't have any open fosters for a single dog, so she reached out to California GSP Rescue. Time was of the essence. The shelter had only given Robin a few days to get Felix out of the shelter before he would be euthanized. Fortunately, everything began to fall into place for Felix once California GSP Rescue agreed to take him.
NorCal Volunteer Connor quickly began putting together a transport, enlisting Caitlin and Steve to take him on the first leg from Dixon to Fresno. There, they would meet Raelyn, who would travel to Bakersfield to meet Ray and Irene for the third and final leg of the transport.
