Duke
Duke is a ten-year-old male German Shorthaired Pointer. Duke lived his entire life with his original owner. Husband, wife, Duke, and a Dachshund. Several years ago, when the first child came along, there were some issues. However, the family worked through them and managed to keep Duke. Last year, the Dachshund passed away. The family waited several months and finally got a puppy - a cute little puppy. Duke wasn't having any part of a new puppy coming into the house and let the family know how unhappy he was with their decision. He attacked the puppy. That was the straw that broke the camel's back. The family reached out to California GSP Rescue, not to place the puppy, but to place Duke!
The family labored over the decision but no longer felt they could manage Duke with the children. The alternative to placing him in Rescue was euthanizing him. Yes, not only was he being replaced by a dog nearly ten years younger, the family was considering putting Duke to sleep.
When the Volunteers at California GSP Rescue heard the family was seriously considering euthanizing Duke, they didn't waste any time. But they didn't have much time to act. The family was leaving for a trip the coming weekend and had no way to manage Duke while they were gone. If California GSP Rescue and Duke's owners couldn't make all the arrangements to get Duke in the next few days, there was only one alternative. The Volunteers at California GSP Rescue made all the necessary arrangements to meet with Duke's owners and get Duke.
Duke isn't a dog for everyone, and he will most likely be best as an only dog seeing he isn't a fan of young puppies. We've introduced him to well-socialized dogs, and he appears uncomfortable and tense. While we will continue to work with him, getting him comfortable around other dogs might be a more significant challenge.
Duke needs someone that will be able to work with him on training and commands. Continued training will be vital for his adopter to develop a relationship with him. He can be a little stubborn, but he knows his name and will come when called - most of the time.
