Zoe Is Safe!
California GSP Rescue first learned about Zoe from a fellow rescuer. Their email was short, letting us know of a GSP needing medical attention in a small out-of-the-way animal shelter, and they had attached a couple of photos of a beautiful German Shorthaired Pointer. Most animal shelters are not in a position to deal with medical issues and will euthanize an animal for "humane reasons" if no one claims or adopts the animal. California GSP Rescue was quick to reply to her email.
The animal shelter had consulted with a veterinarian who responded, "looks like the Achilles tendon has ruptured on probably both hind legs." The Vet continued, "One with mineralized density is probably the worst." Anyone interested would most likely shy away, unaware of the extent of the injury or the medical cost she would need. That didn't deter California GSP Rescue, which has the help of the Rescue Heroes and Donors that help cover the cost of moderate vet bills. California GSP Rescue committed to Ellen that they would help. Just the logistics were left.
Ellen communicated with Volunteer Amy. Zoe was rescued from the shelter and taken to a temporary foster while they planned the rest of Zoe's trip. Meanwhile, the Intake Coordinator for California GSP Rescue was working doing the same from the other end of the trek. They contacted Volunteer David, who, even though he had plans to work, committed to helping and asking only where to be and when. Amy planned to drive down in a few days and would meet David, who would take Zoe to meet Greg. Everything was coming together well.
On Zoe's big day, her foster Mom, who had taken good care of her for the few days before the trip, said goodbye. The Foster Mom was more than happy to pass on some helpful information that would hopefully help Zoe find a home.
The trip itself was pleasant and uneventful, as rescue transports should be. Amy loaded her up and took off. With no significant traffic holdups, she was a little early to meet David. When David arrived a short time later, he met Zoe, who knew something was up and was a little timid. The pass-off was quick, and soon, David was on his way.
When David met Greg in the parking lot of a coffee shop, Greg had just come from the Vet and picked up Rosie and Somm, another new dog, after being spayed and neutered. We knew Zoe had been dog friendly in her foster home, and she would have good company during the last leg of the trip. Zoe was safe!
Collaborating to do something good and rescue a dog is always worth the sacrifices. Everyone involved in getting Zoe from the shelter to California GSP Rescue had managed their time and made the necessary sacrifices to see Zoe was safe. We are grateful to everyone that helped Zoe. If you want to help support our efforts, please consider becoming a Rescue Hero.
Zoe is currently being further evaluated and has an appointment to see Dr. Kang. Check back here for an update.
