The Heartless Story of Johnny and June, Two Rescued Dogs on Valentine's Day
Meet Johnny and June; two German Shorthaired Pointers discovered running loose, either abandoned or having escaped from their backyard. A kind-hearted citizen found them chasing a cat under a parked car and noticed frayed lines attached to each collar, indicating they had once been tied up. Concerned for their safety and unable to contain them in hopes the owner might show up looking for them, the finder immediately contacted animal control to collect the duo and hopefully reunite them with their owner. However, their origin story remains a mystery.
Johnny and June's discovery in a small town should have made it easy for their owner to locate them. However, despite being a tight-knit community, no one came forward to claim them. Animal control was baffled, but the reality was that their shelter was already at maximum capacity, with many other four-legged friends waiting to be reunited with their families or being adopted. It was a situation that played out all too often. Johnny and June were two of the latest victims among the many unclaimed dogs. One slight complication may have played a part in Johnny and June not being claimed.
The situation for Johnny and June was becoming more urgent by the day. Upon inspection, the Animal Shelter discovered that June was pregnant and was concerned that she might give birth any day. The shelter was ill-equipped to handle the needs of a litter of puppies, and it was clear that a rescue organization was their only hope. The search for a suitable rescue led them to California GSP Rescue, a group they had never had to contact before. In the past, the owner would promptly retrieve them when a stray German Shorthaired Pointer found its way to their shelter. But now, the tide had turned. The animal shelter had many dogs like Johnny and June that had been held for the required holding period for their owners to claim and would be held as long as the animal shelter could to find them forever homes or rescues to assist. Things have changed.
For several months, California GSP Rescue has witnessed an increase in the number of young GSP’s needing to be rescued. In addition, the number of scams and questionable breeders has increased due to the fallout from the pandemic. Unfortunately, this problem isn't just with German Shorthaired Pointers but all breeds.
As Volunteer Greg arrived at the small shelter to see Johnny and June, he immediately recognized their purebred GSP status. However, the state of the animal shelter left him concerned. The fallout from the pandemic had resulted in every kennel being occupied, and the shelter was in dire need of space for incoming dogs. Despite being just two dogs, Johnny and June would make a significant impact, freeing up a kennel and buying time for another furry friend. After doing the paperwork, Volunteer Greg loaded up Johnny and June. Getting them back and getting June, who looked like she would whelp at any moment, settled in was the priority. Johnny and June were safe and one step closer to their forever home.
Over the years, California GSP Rescue has faced a large influx of dogs at different times and always has been able to manage. As an all-volunteer organization, relying on the website's visitors and followers on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram to share the stories of the German Shorthaired Pointers rescued and needing forever homes has been vital. Please take a moment and share Johnny and June's story in hopes of helping find them a forever home. Want to do more? Please consider becoming a Rescue Hero.
