Shimo Is Adopted!

Shimo a 3-year-old liver and white male German Shorthaired Pointer came to us when his owners could no longer manage his exercise needs or provide him with the training to thrive. Shimo had demonstrated separation anxiety and did not like to be left alone. He was previously left alone outdoors and learned to clear a 6 ft fence.

We were looking for an active home with someone who could continue training and exercising him. Both are important to see he receives the mental stimulation, as well as the physical stimulation, GSP’s need. Physical exercise is not a walk around the block but a full-on run for thirty-plus minutes multiple times a day.

Matt and Ashley applied to the rescue to adopt a young dog that could keep up with their active family.  Never having GSP’s before, but familiar with the breed, and all the energy required to keep them happy, Ashley reported they were definitely up for the challenge.  We introduced them to Shimo, and it was a great fit for all. Ashley and Matt have managed challenging behaviors before with their labs, and felt they could handle just about anything. and they proved this to be true!!!  We received an update since they brought Shimo home, and here is how things are going now.

“Hi Mariann and All,

Shimo (now known as Albie) has been a wonderful addition to our family. He is very loving, cuddly, curious, adventurous and eager to learn and please his new humans. He loves to go for walks first thing in the morning and then at lunch and right before bedtime. He also loves to hunt for little critters in the garden.

The first few weeks he was curious to learn about his new neighborhood and was quite the escape artist. Soon he realized this was his forever home and now seems to be more concerned about losing us. We can keep the doors and windows open and he stays close.

I highly recommend GSP’s as a family dog. He only barks when strangers are at the door (which I appreciate) and is trainable. For training, it does take patience, time and consistency, but definitely pays off. Since Albie has been abandoned a couple of times, it took him a while to settle in, but now we couldn't imagine life without him as an integral family member.

Thank you to all the volunteers at the GSP group for rescuing these wonderful dogs and giving them a second chance at life!

Matt, Ashley and our two boys
