Forgotten Puppy Comte Rescued by California GSP Rescue

Comte

The heartwarming tale of Motzi and her pups continues with an unexpected twist. Recently, another abandoned GSP Mix puppy from Motzi's litter was discovered and brought to the shelter. The California GSP Rescue team couldn't bear to leave her fate up to chance. They immediately sprang into action, determined to save her from her destiny of being an unadoptable dog at the animal shelter.

Comte was alone and scared when she arrived at the shelter and was taken to the kennels in the back of the animal shelter. The same place Motzi and the pups had been kept red-listed. Red-listed is a term used for dogs that are either unadoptable or out of time and awaiting euthanasia.

California GSP Rescue received a call from Michelle a few days before asking if we could help one more puppy from Motzi's litter. The Animal Control Officer had missed her when he collected Motzi and her litter from the apartment complex. It would be a few days later before Animal Control would return and collect Comte.

Comte moved to the back of her kennel as the gate opened. Michelle, the Rescue Coordinator, had led Volunteer Greg back to the kennel Comte was being kept. Not knowing what the stranger wanted or what he might do, she attempted to disappear into the floor and back wall of the kennel. If she remained still, the stranger wouldn't see her.

Volunteer Greg moved slowly and spoke in a soft voice, pausing several times so Comte wouldn't feel threatened. He knew fast movements would make her nervous and elevate her fear. When the time was right, he moved to touch her somewhere near her hindquarters. She looked but did not lunge or bite. He slowly began to pet her. As he stroked her fur, Comte began to realize that she was safe and he meant her no harm. The process was slow, but several minutes later, Volunteer Greg had Comte in his arms and headed for the exit. Comte was safe and one step closer to her forever home.

It's been several days since Motzi, Comte, and the other "cheese" pups were rescued from the animal shelter. California GSP Rescue is happy to report daily interactions with humans; each pup is gaining more confidence. You can see the difference in Comte's video below.

California GSP Rescue would like to thank all the volunteers, donors, and Rescue Heroes that help support our efforts. Deciding to rescue a GSP Mix Mother and her pups isn't easy, but knowing we have the support to provide them with food and medical attention helps. The shelters are full and are struggling to deal with the influx of unwanted pets. Rescuing Comte, Motzi, and other pups creates space for hard-to-place dogs. Instead of being euthanized, unwanted dogs get a chance at a forever home.
