Rescued and Redeemed: Lunalu's Story

Lunalu, a female German Shorthaired Pointer, spent countless days in a filthy kennel, her world reduced to a small, dark space. Animal control officers confiscated her from her deplorable living conditions, and she was brought to a local shelter, her future uncertain.

Kristina, a previous adopter living near the shelter, had learned about a GSP in the local shelter and taken it upon herself to ensure Lunalu's safety and well-being. Her unwavering dedication to the breed and the rescue cause was evident as she reached out to California GSP Rescue, hoping they would help the GSP confiscated from horrific conditions.

Rescuing a GSP from a distant shelter is not without its challenges, particularly in coordinating transport. However, the commitment and availability of Volunteers Mariann, John, and David were instrumental in ensuring that California GSP Rescue could fulfill their promise to the shelter.

Later, California GSP Rescue learned that Lunalu's previous owner kept her in a small, filthy kennel with a gate that had been closed shut so tightly, it was no longer functional. As a result, the floor was covered in feces, and the owner simply threw food through the chain link onto the mess. To prevent Lunalu from escaping, the owner tied her neck to a tether with metal wire, causing a deep wound that festered.

Mariann and John arrived early at the animal shelter and found Lunalu in a kennel much larger than the other dogs. She seemed to enjoy the extra space she had never been allowed, but one could immediately see that, like most GSP’s, she longed more for human interaction and touch. She immediately came to the fence to greet Mariann and John, wanting more than anything to be loved.

Volunteer David met Mariann and John to help transport her to the second leg of her journey. Everyone noted that she was vocal about being put in a smaller crate away from where she could be petted and loved.

Lunalu, a beautiful example of a German Shorthaired Pointer, is a testament to the breed's resilience. Despite exhibiting some behaviors that are remnants of her past, she has adapted remarkably to her new environment in her foster home. The first day or two were challenging as she whined and barked most of the time, but she soon settled into the routine. She didn't have to be so vocal to be fed, which was done twice a day, or to get attention, as she started the day off with a long brisk walk. Watch her video for a peek into her rescue and foster home.

Lunalu didn't deserve the life she previously had, and California GSP Rescue is seeking a family that will give her all the attention and love she deserves. If you know how to love a dog and consider them part of the family, please consider submitting an application for Lunalu.

If you cannot adopt, you can still help by sharing this post and Lunalu's story. If you'd like to do more, consider becoming a Rescue Hero and helping be a part of California's GSP Rescue's mission to help unwanted German Shorthaired Pointers.
