Ranger is Safe!

Ranger

For several months, animal shelters have sent emails asking for help because they do not have any room. Many of the dogs they cannot place are the older mixes and purebreds that adopters often overlook. Recently, California GSP Rescue received notification from an animal shelter that someone had come in to relinquish their German Shorthaired Pointer, Ranger, a one-eyed 12-year-old powder-faced male. The animal control officer, looking down at the sad-eyed gray face with no kennels available, knew the likely fate of Ranger and referred the owner to California GSP Rescue. Fortunately, the owner willingly took the advice.

Shortly after receiving the notification from the shelter, the owner contacted California GSP Rescue about rehoming Ranger. Due to where Ranger lived and the little time in which the owner wanted to place him, there were going to be a few challenges - it's not unusual for owners not to better plan relinquishing their dogs. Fortunately, a California GSP Rescue Volunteer and an adopter lived near enough and were willing to help.

Volunteer Teri, who would do anything to ensure a Senior GSP is safe, planned to meet the owner. She would then take Ranger to Rebecca's house, who had previously planned a trip to California GSP Rescue. This plan was all to take place early one Saturday morning, just a few days after the owner had visited the Animal Shelter to relinquish Ranger. As California GSP Rescue later learned, there was no room for delays as the owner had made plans to travel out of town later that same Saturday. Hard to believe a planned trip might be the deciding factor for Ranger's owner giving him up after 12 years.

Early on a Saturday, Volunteer Teri met the owner as previously arranged. She spoke to the owner briefly, attempting to learn anything the owner had not previously shared. He let her know Ranger lost his eye in a car accident; at least they thought a car had hit him after he got out and later found missing an eye. Teri asked more questions. The more she knew about Ranger, the easier it might be to find him a home. There wasn't much left the owner had to share as he handed Teri the leash and two pieces of paper, a bill of transfer, and a record of Ranger's last Rabies Vaccine given by the Animal Shelter. Nothing else.

Teri collected Ranger and loaded him up, giving him lots of love. She knew his best days were yet to come as she went to meet Rebecca and John, who would help her transport Ranger to California GSP Rescue, and one step closer to his forever home. Ranger was safe.

California GSP Rescue is dedicated to finding GSP’s like Ranger forever homes. We are grateful to those individuals that support our efforts by adopting the dogs we rescue. We are also thankful to those individuals that share our posts and help us find adopters, as we know there is an adopter for every dog we rescue, even one-eyed 12-year-old dogs like Ranger.
