Margo

Margo was California GSP Rescue's first GSP rescued this year after the Fourth of July celebration. However, she was picked up as a stray before the holiday — a dangerous time and place for dogs this time of year.

Just a few days after the Fourth of July celebration and fireworks, Animal Shelters are usually at capacity. Dogs that are taken in before the holiday will be the first to be re-evaluated as the shelter needs to make room for additional dogs. Because many families travel during July, adoptions at the shelters dip. The sad truth is that the Animal Shelters are left to euthanize dogs to make room for any strays coming in after the Fourth of July.

Margo was an older dog. Families looking to adopt wouldn't be looking for dogs as old as Margo. They would most likely be looking for puppies or one to two-year-old dogs.

California GSP Rescue had been monitoring Margo after receiving several emails about her. When she was being held, California GSP Rescue notified the Animal Shelter that they could assist if the owner didn't claim her. As her stray hold came to an end, and the holiday had passed, California GSP Rescue made plans to get her.

The volunteer arrived at the shelter, and every kennel appeared to be full as they walked to meet Margo. The barking was deafening as the dogs vied for any attention from the people that passed by. Each dog seemed to know the clock was ticking.

Margo appeared to have grown accustomed to the barking as she was led back to the play area. Entering the fenced-in yard, she was tentative to the stranger that was not ordinarily present. However, a few minutes passed, and she was more interested in seeing if any birds or other small animals found their way into the area.

While the shelter had Margo as nine years old, she moved around as if she was half that age. She sat for a treat and even ran after and "fetched" a ball. Yes, she was older than most adopters would be looking for, but California GSP Rescue was confident they could find her a home. Margo was safe!

California GSP Rescue would like to extend its gratitude to the rescue coordinator at the shelter where Margo was held. She had spent time with her and shared what information she could find out about this sweet girl in hopes of finding her a home. Her effort paid off. Thank you.
