Love, Hope, and Healing: Juno's Journey
A simple shelter photo of Juno, a 9-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer, initially presented a picture of a seemingly healthy dog. However, a few days later, a stark reality was revealed. A massive, unsightly tumor hung from her body, dragging along the floor. This sudden transformation from a picture of health to a stark image of illness was both shocking and heartbreaking. The question wasn't whether California GSP Rescue would take her, but how they would get her to Dr. Kang for the urgent medical attention she needed.
With unwavering determination, the rescue team sprang into action. They coordinated her transfer, consulting with Dr. Kang to ensure she received the medical attention she desperately needed. Arrangements were made for a foster home that could take her to any follow-up appointments she might need. All this was done before Volunteer Greg arrived at the shelter to rescue Juno.
With all the kennels full, Juno was found in an area designated for dogs needing medical care. Sadly, the situation at the shelter hasn't changed; several litters of young puppies occupied several kennels, waiting to be adopted or rescued.
The shelter staff helped ensure that the transport wasn't delayed. Juno was brought from the back as the paperwork was completed, and she was loaded up in the back of Greg's "dog car." Uncertain what Juno's future would be, it was better than the grim reality had she remained at the animal shelter.
Once fitted with a belly band, Juno had a little more mobility. She immediately learned the doggy door and used it whenever she needed to do her business. She didn't mind the other dogs and seemed to enjoy "the puppies," although she would quickly excuse herself and retire to her crate to escape the endless puppy playfulness. It was hard to believe someone would dump a dog like Juno because of her medical issue, but Dr. Kang suspected there was more to the story.
After examining her, Dr. Kang said it appeared Juno had been caged and used for breeding. He refrained from making a judgment, knowing his job was to help Juno get back to health so she could find a forever home. As Dr. Kang put it, the Rescue's job is messy; his job is to help clean up.
After the surgery, which lasted over three hours, Juno's resilience shone through. She was transported to her foster home, where Jenn and Dan would give her all the love she needed while she recovered. Despite the complicated surgery, she is doing nicely and getting around, a testament to her strength and spirit.
If you know the beauty of having an older dog in your life, we ask that you share Juno's story, video, and any personal stories of the joys an older dog can bring. While it'll be a few weeks before she is available for adoption, we could use your help now encouraging others to apply. If you'd like to help with her vet bill, please consider donating. With your help, we can continue to rescue dogs like Juno, and your contribution will make a significant difference in her recovery.
