Lost, Found, Then Abandoned: The Story of Corazon and Estrella
Early on Valentine's Day, California GSP Rescue received an email about two dogs, Corazon and Estrella, who had been found running loose in a remote canyon in Southern California. Animal control had been notified and was en route to pick them up. When The Rescue spoke with animal control later the next day, they learned that both dogs were microchipped, and they had contacted the owner. However, two weeks passed, and the rescue team received an email about the pair still at the animal shelter. This is the story of Corazon and Estrella, lost, found, and ultimately abandoned.
The finder of Corazon and Estrella was deeply concerned about their well-being and what might happen to them if their owner didn't claim them. Fortunately, a friend of the person who found and caught the dogs decided to take action. They sent an email to California GSP Rescue, a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and rehoming German Shorthaired Pointers. The email explained the dogs' situation and asked for help. The rescue team immediately sprang into action, contacting the Shelter to let them know that they were available to take Corazon and Estrella if the dogs went unclaimed.
At first, there was a sigh of relief when Animal Control stated that both girls had microchips and they were in contact with the owner. Many of the GSP’s rescued by California GSP Rescue did not have microchips, so it was heartening to know that Corazon and Estrella had them and that they were registered. However, there was an immediate concern when the rescue team received an email a little less than two weeks later stating that the pair was up for adoption. What had happened to their owner? Why hadn't they claimed their beloved pets?
After receiving the email about Corazon and Estrella still at the Animal Shelter, the rescue team wasted no time contacting the Shelter. When they did, the Animal Control Officer revealed they were already preparing to reach out to California GSP Rescue. Unfortunately, the news about the dogs' owner was not good. Despite being contacted by the Shelter, the owner had never come to claim Corazon and Estrella. The pair had been waiting in kennels at the Animal Shelter for two weeks.
With the Animal Shelter needing kennels, time was of the essence. The rescue team began the plans to get Corazon and Estrella as soon as possible. Volunteers David and Peggy quickly rearranged their schedules to pickup and transport the dogs. When David arrived at the Shelter, Corazon and Estrella's tails wagged happily to see him. Though he wasn't their owner, David was there to take them to safety. A short time later, he met Peggy at a nearby park to transfer the dogs on the last leg of their journey. Corazon and Estrella were delighted to get a few moments in the grass and smell the scents of the park. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers like David and Peggy and all the other Volunteers of California GSP Rescue, Corazon and Estrella were safe and one step closer to finding their forever home.
Besides Volunteers, California GSP Rescue relies on Adopters and Rescue Heroes. There is currently a crisis with the number of unwanted dogs, and the Animal Shelters are either at capacity or over capacity. Please consider supporting the efforts of California GSP Rescue by either Volunteering, Adopting, or becoming a Rescue Hero.
