In Loving Memory Of Greta

Greta

In early 2015, a precious German Shorthaired Pointer named Ellie Mae was rescued by California GSP Rescue from a local animal shelter. This 2-year-old female was brought in as a stray just after Christmas, and sadly, after being held for the mandatory holding period, no one came forward to claim her. Fortunately, California GSP Rescue took her under their wing, and shortly after, Jacqueline and her family had the opportunity of meeting and falling in love with her. They adopted Ellie Mae and changed her name to Greta, providing her with a loving forever home. However, Greta recently passed away, and this is Jacqueline's heartfelt memorial for her.

“Greta Kruse passed away peacefully on March 1, 2023. She was adored by her owners Jackie,  Jordon, Colin, Jackson and Addison Kruse. She was the close companion and confidant of her  beloved sister Magy Kruse, who she often referred to as “Miss Bossy.” Greta’s birthdate and origin are unknown, as the Kruse Family adopted her through California GSP Rescue, a wonderful organization dedicated to placing orphaned German Shorthair Pointers with loving families. Upon meeting the Kruse Family for the first time, Greta immediately rolled onto her back, put her paws in the air and used her eternal puppy dog eyes to procure her first tummy rub from the Kruse Boys, a joy that she was able to regularly obtain using the same wily skills for the rest of her life.

While rescued through California GSP, Greta was anything but a purebred dog. She had the classic face of a beautiful German Shorthair Pointer and the body of a beagle, and could best be described as a bird/hot dog. Greta’s favorite past times included digging holes and burying brand new toys or bones, chasing squirrels, patrolling the area behind our backyard hedges and barking at apparently nothing, and playing tug of war with Magy. With respect to this last activity, Greta was undefeated against her older, larger and stronger sister, bringing pride to underdogs mutts everywhere. She was known to take long naps in the grass basking in the hot sun. She was a prolific snorer. In Santa Ynez, she could often be found with her head in a gopher hole, seeking that elusive prey that neither she nor Magy ever successfully captured. On walks, she could be totally passive or totally aggressive. She often would stop in the middle of a walk and simply refuse to go any further, however she would lunge and bark ferociously at any dog in her path in attempt to announce her presence with authority, knowing full well that she defined the cliché  “her bark is worse than her bite.” On the day she passed, having experienced several weeks of sickness and lethargy, she headed out to the backyard for one more jaunt, chasing her last squirrel around the back hedge, hopping about and barking like a puppy.

She was a loving, sweet dog who was a joy to her family and will be sorely missed by all the  Kruses, in particular Magy, whose now exclusive access to an undestroyed Lambchop, her favorite stuffed toy, will be bittersweet”.

California GSP Rescue extends their heartfelt gratitude to Jacqueline and her family for providing Greta with a loving and forever home. The selflessness and kindness demonstrated by adopters like Jacqueline are what enable California GSP Rescue to make a positive difference in the lives of so many German Shorthaired Pointers. Jacqueline's decision to adopt Greta has not only changed the dog's life but also provided a meaningful and lasting impact on her own. While the loss of Greta is a difficult and trying time, we hope that Jacqueline and her family find solace in the cherished memories and experiences they shared with Greta.
