Liza's Second Chance: The Journey to Save a Stray GSP

Liza

Meet Liza, a nine-year-old female German Shorthaired Pointer who found herself spending a week at the shelter after being picked up as a stray. Her fate took a turn for the better when California GSP Rescue stepped in just in time, saving her from the overwhelming influx of dogs at the local shelter.

In recent weeks, an unusual number of German Shorthaired Pointers have been showing up at shelters. Greg, a dedicated volunteer for California GSP Rescue, woke up to messages from Teri and Andrea, both early risers and also volunteers, alerting him about Liza. While Greg initially thought he had recently been told of a dog looking like Liza, there was no record to be found. This meant starting from square one, a task Greg willingly took on to give Liza a second chance at a loving home.

The rescue process began with confirming the shelter location where Liza was physically housed and an identification number, which is sometimes challenging when all the information isn't shared on social media. Once confirmed, Greg moved on to determine if she was available for Rescue. In some cases, shelters hold onto desirable dogs to explore local adoptions before involving rescues. The final step involved planning a visit to the shelter and coordinating an earlier appointment for two younger GSP’s.

The scene at the animal shelter was overwhelming, with multiple dogs crammed into nearly every kennel. Liza, in kennel 65 with a couple of other stray dogs, cautiously stayed toward the back, unsure of the stranger who had stopped to observe her. With gold highlights on her face and unmistakable German Shorthaired Pointer features, Greg knew California GSP Rescue could find her a home.

Though the shelter referred to her as Gizmo, a quick suggestion to name her Liza stuck. This sweet and slightly older girl wouldn't spend another night in the shelter, ensuring she'd see another Christmas as the animal shelter took in a staggering 40 animals the same day she was rescued.

Liza is more than just an unwanted stray; she's a gentle soul craving love and attention. Despite being a bit older than the other rescues, her sweet nature makes her an ideal companion. If you're interested in adopting Liza, submitting an application is the first step. And for those who want to support the ongoing efforts of California GSP Rescue, consider becoming a Rescue Hero. Together, we can make a significant impact on alleviating the strain on overcrowded animal shelters and ensure more stories like Liza's have a happy ending.
