In Loving Memory Of Jake
All the German Shorthaired Pointers we rescue are exceptional, but there are some whose stories touch us in a way we'll never forget. Jake was one of those dogs. Jake was a fourteen-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer that was relinquished to us when his elderly blind owner, a retired Colonel in the United States Marine Corps, moved into assisted living and wasn't allowed to take Jake. While we knew placing a fourteen-year-old GSP would be a challenge, we knew there were no options for his owner. We were honored to be able to assist.
After we posted Jake's story, we had an inquiry from Bob. Bob had a senior dog and was very concerned that Jake and Brady, his ten-year-old GWP, would get along. He had rescued Brady nine years earlier from a shelter. Bob spoke of Brady so fondly, and with such concern, we hoped the two dogs would get along as we felt Bob was perfect for Jake.
Brady and Jake got along well when they first met and became brothers. They both were well cared for and loved by Bob and Patrick. We couldn't have asked for better adopters.
Jake lived to be seventeen, outliving Brady, and his original owner, but passed away a short time ago. After grieving, Bob wrote the following about Jake.
”Now that I've had some time to heal from losing Jake, I wanted to share his journey. You remember he had hip issues when we adopted him. For the past 2 yrs he wasn't able to get up from the floor by himself anymore, and when he tried he pooped. The Vet told us he wasn't in pain, and as long as he was eating, and enjoying life. Then Covid hit, and we figured, well we're going to be home 24/7 anyway, so someone will always be home with him. We put a twin mattress in the living room and he was able to wiggle himself up, especially when someone went into the kitchen!! He still liked walking to the park with me everyday, although he cut the walks shorter all the time. LOL I would take his leash off about 3 houses away from ours, and he would hop like a bunny all the way home! Once we brought Brillo home, Jake was like a puppy again for the first couple days and then I think he knew we'd be OK so he let us know he was ready to go. He was the sweetest/pain in the ass boy, and I'm so glad we were able to spoil him rotten in his last years. Thanks for the opportunity. Bob & Patrick”
Thank you, Bob and Patrick, for adopting Jake and letting him live out his remaining years loved.
