Hope for Abandoned GSPs: Laika, Comet, & Lexie's Rescue Story
It was a crisp, cool morning as Erika loaded the three German Shorthaired Pointers in her van. A week had dragged on while they were held in the shelter, just in case someone was looking for them. Timid and unsure as they experienced their first steps of freedom, the three weren't aware they had spent their last night in a full shelter waiting for someone who wasn't coming. Yet, even in their uncertainty, their resilience shone through as they unknowingly prepared for a life-changing journey.
Erika from One Dane At A Time sent a message that three GSPs were at a shelter in the Central Valley. We would later learn that someone had left all three dogs at a Veterinarian's office. One of them had a broken leg that might need to be amputated. She wanted to know if we could help. Without a moment's hesitation, without needing any additional information, we immediately committed to the three dogs, understanding the urgency and importance of their Rescue and knowing there was support from the Rescue Heroes and our supporters.
The transport didn't go smoothly. After Laika, Comet, and Lexie settled into Erika's van, a breakdown forced a detour to a mechanic. Despite the delay, the three patient pups waited calmly in the back of the vehicle while the mechanic made the necessary repairs. A few hours later, with Erika behind the wheel, they continued their trek, meeting Irene and Ray, who offered a grassy pitstop. There, the most injured dog, her broken leg dangling precariously, surprised everyone with her playful spirit. After belly rubs, photos, and goodbyes, Irene and Ray whisked them away to meet Greg, their final ride to a new beginning. After a late-night handoff in a parking lot, they settled in Greg's car and were one step closer to a forever home.
The following day, there would be time to examine each dog in daylight. All three appeared to have good demeanors but were thin, as their ribs and hip bones were visible. They would need to get weight on them. Laika was the most outgoing and quickly got comfortable when offered treats and pets. Comet, the male, was timid and less sure. He looked for Laika and Lexie for confidence. Once he saw them, he seemed to relax. Lexie was a puppy full of that bouncy energy - a little more confident than Comet; she would sometimes freeze plopping on the ground if unsure. In their short time at the Rescue, they are quickly gaining confidence and beginning to show their active, playful natures.
Laika, Comet, and Lexie's story is a testament to the incredible spirit of rescued German Shorthaired Pointers. Would you be willing to provide them with a forever home?
