Duke is Safe!

Duke Safe Rescue Shelter EuthanisiaDuke was taken to an animal shelter in the North Central Valley by his owner because he killed a cat or cats as reported to the shelter. It's unclear if Duke's previous owner thought he would be safe while the shelter tried to find him a home, or even if he cared. He like most individuals that relinquish their pets to the shelter, didn't inquire about the euthanasia rate, or even the adoption rate. Taking Duke to the shelter was a convenience for the owner, and little thought was given of what might happen to Duke if he wasn't adopted. While the shelter did hold Duke to see if they could find him a home, after several days and no interest, the shelter reached out to NorCal Volunteer Robin to see if they could help. With no foster homes available for a dog with a high prey drive, Robin asked California GSP Rescue if we could manage a GSP with a high prey drive. Knowing that Duke's time was running out and he wouldn't be safe where he was much longer, we immediately replied that we could assist. We deal with GSPs that have high prey drives, and were confident we could keep any cats safe from Duke while Duke was in our care. While Duke remained at the shelter with the clock still ticking, NorCal Volunteer Dalia started making arrangements to pull and transport Duke. She put a message out for Pilots and Paws and received a response a short time later from a fellow GSP owner and rescue supporter Russell. Russell who was a pilot was more than happy to help Duke out and fly him to Southern California. Dalia also reached out to NorCal Volunteer Louis, who coincidentally had adopted Hunter Thomas from California GSP Rescue a few years back. Louis agreed to pull Duke from the shelter, overnight Duke, and meet Russell early the next morning. With less than 48 hours left on the clock for Duke, Louis pulled him from the shelter and Duke began his journey. Duke was safe! Duke spent his first night out of the shelter with Louis and his family. He got along well with his dogs, girls, and even Hunter Thomas. Louis couldn't believe what an amazing dog Duke was. Who could give up such an amazing dog and risk him being put to sleep? Louis wasn't the only one impressed with Duke. Russell, after meeting Louis and flying Duke to Southern California, was just as impressed with Duke and how well he did in the plane. "He curled up in the back and slept most of the way down". Russell was also amazed that a dog like Duke could end up at a kill shelter.Just a little over 24 hours, Duke made his way to the California GSP Rescue and one step closer to his forever home thanks to several concerned volunteers. We thank Robin, Dalia, Louis, & Russell for making the time to help a great GSP like Duke get another chance in a home without cats! California GSP Rescue is an all volunteer non-profit rescue that relies on volunteers willing to donate their time to help rescue and place German Shorthaired Pointers. If you are interested in helping make sure dogs are safe and end up in forever homes, we invite you to contact us and learn how you can help.
