Chamonix Is Adopted!

Chamonix with Justin and Dawn

Justin had experience with GSP's and Dawn had not had a dog. They had been waiting for the right time in their life to re-introduce dogs into their life, and Justin knew he wanted a GSP. He had grown up with GSP's and loved their energy, intelligence and family friendly nature he had experienced with the breed.

We wanted to find the right dog for them as they had a child in the home. Not a young baby or toddler, but still wanted to ensure the dog and this nice family were set up for success. Chamonix had been turned in and had many reports of both living with children and interacting with children of the same age as Justin and Dawn's son. They met Chamonix and went home to ponder timing of bringing her into their household, and get her a few fun items to come home to. Below is Justin's report of Chamonix first few months with them.

We adopted Chamonix (Chammy) in February 2022. Her kind eyes and beautiful profile picture
were irresistible. My previous 12 years experience with a GSP is what brought me to seek
another GSP, and I was well prepared for the energy and vitality that this dog has.

At 2.5 years of age, Chammy surpasses that anticipation, because she’s at the very top of the
energy scale. I have never seen a dog run so fast or scale up a hill leaping upward. Her strength
and energy are jaw dropping.

She is extremely smart, and adaptable. She has learned to go potty only in the backyard and
we’ve had no mistakes in the house; she will wake you up licking your face and let you know if
she needs to go out.

From the moment we brought Chammy home, she has been pure entertainment, we belly laugh
at her jumps in the air, her confident attitude and playfulness. We immediately fell in love
with her and she settled into her home so fast like she has lived here for years.

She is quite the routine dog, and starts her day early when the sun rises, she usually goes out
to potty but then settles back to nap, and she’s very well mannered and won’t wake you up, she
just glances at you, waiting for her day to start.

By 8:00AM she’s fully patrolling the back yard for birds and checking out the squirrels
movement by the cactus from her elevated position by the fence. When she tires out she then
settles into her cushioned bench baking in the sun for at least an hour (definitely a sun
goddess). By 12:00 she’s ready for a walk or a brisk run.

For high activity, once a day we take her on the trail and at the end of the trail where there is a
fenced abandoned area, she goes off leash to run wild like a Mustang chasing birds that she’ll
never catch. She finds her way back to me every time, tired and satisfied.

Chammy is very gentle, good with our son, she’s a pack animal and wants everyone together.
She likes to think she’s the matriarch, and checks what everyone is doing at all times.

In the afternoon Chammy will always greet you in the backyard with a stuffed toy, a rope in her
mouth. She loves to play; every day is filled with playfulness and activity for her.

We are very lucky to have a fairly big back yard that she will patrol end to end for birds and
transfix on other moving animals for hours. She does not bark at passing people or other dogs;
because as a hunting dog she seems fully focused on birds, gophers, squirrels.

When the sun does down, Chammy settles down and is usually sleeping by 8PM checking on
us with one eye open, and by 10PM she’s fully in her bed exhausted.

Chammy gets extremely excited with her toys and will get rambunctious in the house; she loves
to play and constantly bring toys over to tease you into playing with her. Chammy is a good listener and obedient, but she does like to check quite often what is cooking and what is on the counter top, so we’re still working on this habit to keep her off. She knows very well to stay off the sleeping beds, but does push her limit on a spot at the end of the couch and makes those eyes like nothing is going on worth getting upset about. But if we give her an inch, she’ll take a mile, so we are careful.

We are still working on her pulling on the leash hard, she’s very excited to smell, to check birds
and point to any moving creatures, so as a hunting dog it does not come easy for her to be a
good leash dog, but she has improved a lot, and does listen to training (just need a lot more of
it).

Overall Chammy is a kid at heart, affectionate, playful, kind, social, naughty. As a GSP she is
truly full of life and vitality, and hence she needs interaction and wants to be part of the daily
activities in the house. Chammy is a kind soul, truly beautiful, very proper and lady like, very entertaining and we love her to pieces, but we also make an effort to accommodate her energy needs and give her attention”.
