Beyond Loyalty: A Story of Love, Loss, and Rescue
As the shadows of inevitability loomed, Skye and Sequoia, loyal beyond words, rested near their owner, offering a silent yet profound comfort. When the inevitable finally came, he left behind an echoing void and two devoted companions. Before parting, he had arranged with Maurice and his wife that if something happened to either of them, the other would care for their dogs. True to their promise, Maurice and his wife welcomed Skye and Sequoia into their home. However, they quickly realized Skye and Sequoia needed more than they could give, like many unfamiliar with German Shorthaired Pointers. Determined to honor their commitment, they began considering the options.
Maurice found the bill of sale for Skye and Sequoia. Even though the contract stated that "for no reason will the puppy be accepted for return or exchange," Maurice reached out to the breeder to see if he might offer assistance. The breeder was friendly and answered Maurice's questions, but when asked about assisting with rehoming the girls, the breeder quickly referred Maurice to California GSP Rescue.
Living in a small community, neighbors quickly learned of Maurice's dilemma and proposed a less suitable solution involving breeding. Like many unknowing individuals, a few thought breeding the pair of purebred German Shorthaired Pointers could provide a lucrative side hustle. While Maurice and his wife weren't currently aware of the number of puppies relinquished to shelters by people who also thought breeding could be lucrative, they were keenly aware of the number of dogs in animal shelters needing homes and advocated adopting over purchasing. Breeding Skye and Sequoia wasn't an option.
Not having much luck finding someone they trusted to care for Skye and Sequoia and knowing the girls needed more than they could give, Maurice and his wife contacted California GSP Rescue. Over the years, California GSP Rescue has helped many German Shorthaired Pointers whose owners passed away and were committed to seeing each go to a home that understood the breed. In honor of Skye and Sequoia's previous owner's wishes, the girls would go to a home where they would be loved and cared for.
Making arrangements for our pets if something happens to us is frequently neglected. While the stories of loyalty and comfort they give to us in our moments of need live on, ensuring we show in return their love and dedication by guaranteeing they are cared for when we are no longer here should be part of our planning. Right now is the perfect time to make arrangements. Reach out to those who can assist you with your pet, ensuring they know about the breed. If there are no friends or family members, contact animal welfare groups and rescues to make the necessary arrangements. Remember the financial support they'll need and consider planned giving. By leaving a legacy gift, you'll provide the essential support to care for your pet while they find a forever home and support the organization's long-term goals.
Please consider submitting an adoption application to learn more about Skye or Sequoia. If you cannot adopt, please take a moment and share their story. We are confident there is someone who can provide them with a home their previous owner and Maurice and his wife wished for.
