Betty Boop Is Adopted!

Peter and Sue applied to California GSP Rescue as they were looking for a friend for their 3 year old Husky/Lab mix Indy.  Peter and Sue are previous GSP owners and are aware of the challenges a young GSP can present. They were both committed to start that process again and adopt another dog as a friend for their current dog.

Here is how they are doing…….

We adopted Betty-Boop at the beginning of September 2023 and quickly renamed her Maisy.  Maisy is a great dog, very sweet, affectionate and eager to please.  Everyone in the family loves her and she has been a great companion for our other dog Indy.  Being a very active puppy, however, she can get into trouble if not kept busy and well exercised. She’s chewed up several pairs of shoes and socks that were left on floor, but nothing out of the ordinary for a young dog.  We minimize the destruction by walking her and Indy in the morning and in the evening, and also in the afternoon if work allows.  She spends a good bit of the afternoon playing with Indy. They wrestle and chase each other around the yard quite a bit.

We’ve faced a number of challenges since adopting her. When we first brought her home we were a little lazy and did not go out and buy the food she had been eating previously at California GSP rescue. That was a mistake! Very messy and smelly for a few weeks. While she has been very good about learning to sit and to come, it’s been a continuing challenge to stop her from jumping on people. We’ve tried ignoring her and turning our backs when she jumps, but she just ends up jumping on your back.  We’ve had some success with telling her to sit, but she’ll sit for a few seconds and then start jumping again. Jumping is something we’ll need to continue to work on, but I feel it has improved somewhat. The other thing we are working on is trying to get her to stop pulling on the leash. I think we need to spend some more time with her using some of the techniques we’ve seen on YOU TUBE like changing direction when the dog starts to get out ahead.

While we’ve had some challenges with Maisy, (which will continue I’m sure), she’s been a great addition to the family and we’re very glad we have her. California GSP Rescue has also been great. We had a number of questions when we first brought Maisy home, and Marianne and Greg were both very responsive and helpful.  We highly recommend CAGSP Rescue, and will come back if we are looking for another dog in the future”.

Sincerely,

Pete and Sue
