A Diamond in the Rough: Mookie's Second Chance

Lost and alone, Mookie, a three-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer was overwhelmed by the unfamiliar sights and sounds of the animal shelter. It wasn't his first visit. Having escaped his yard and been brought to the shelter previously, Mookie found comfort with the animal control officers, who knew his owner and reached out to him to let them know Mookie was in their care. He said he would show up but never did.

Mookie's owner's broken promise left him stranded in the shelter. Surrounded by barking dogs and unfamiliar faces, Mookie waited anxiously in the shelter. Despite repeated attempts to reach out to the owner, the shelter was met with silence. With growing concern, they knew they would need to find Mookie a new home quickly or face the devastating possibility of euthanasia.

Animal shelters throughout California have been struggling with the surge of stray and unwanted dogs. There aren't enough adopters for the number of unwanted animals they take in. Relationships with rescues have been essential for saving many dogs and cats, but even the rescues face the same challenges with the increased number of animals.

Fortunately, California GSP Rescue is a registered partner with the animal shelter where Mookie was being held. An inquiry was sent from the shelter for assistance. Seeing the image of a majestic looking purebred German Shorthaired Pointer left little doubt that California GSP Rescue could help. Arrangements were made for Volunteer David to visit the shelter and pickup Mookie.

When David arrived at the shelter, he was reminded of how challenging GSP’s can be if they haven't been given the training or attention they need. But he also knows that German Shorthaired Pointers like Mookie can become completely different dogs in a short amount of time once they are put on a normal routine that includes exercise, training, and attention. David could see a diamond in the rough as Mookie rode in the back of his truck.

GSP’s are an amazing breed with a number of good qualities if given the proper attention. They are active, resilient, and love being around their people. They thrive in homes where the family is active and finds a reason to get outside every day. If this sounds like you, please consider submitting an adoption application for Mookie. If not, you can still make a difference by sharing Mookie's post and video. The perfect match for Mookie might be someone you know!
