Rothko Is Adopted!

Peter and Jennifer applied to adopt a young puppy as a companion and playmate for their 6 year old female GSP, Sami. With plenty of experience and knowledge of the breed, along with an active lifestyle, we knew that Peter and Jennifer would be able to provide the right amount of exercise, training, structure and just the right amount of fun a young GSP needs.

We had just acquired a litter of pups a few months earlier, and the timing was perfect. We introduced them to Rothko, an all liver male GSP with a splash of white on his chest, and it became clear that Sami was bringing home a new brother with a new name, Wyatt.

We have received some updates from Peter and Jennifer to let us know how Wyatt is doing. We always appreciate these updates and love to share them so that others can not only witness the transformation and blossoming of a rescue dog in a loving home, but also learn about some of the challenges that arise, especially with a young puppy, and how they are managed.

We are very grateful to Peter and Jennifer for reaching out to us to adopt, and for providing Rothko, now Wyatt a home that every dog deserves. Wyatt hit the jackpot!

Hello Teri and Greg,

It has been just about 24 hours since we picked up Rothko. He didn't really respond to that name at all very well, so we are going to call him Wyatt. He just looks like a Wyatt to me. So far all is great. He rode home beautifully! Very very well behaved. Got home last night and we had to give them both a quick bath and he was very good with that. He was good in the house. He went into his crate with no big issues at all. Maybe one little whimper but that was it. Stayed in the crate really nice and quiet all night and no accidents. Took him for a long walk this morning and he was actually very good on leash overall. He did have one little pee accident in the house this morning but not a big deal at all. He and Sami are getting along well. Some play going on and all good so far.

Wyatt continues to do very very well.  He is a very good boy, or, at least he tries to be. There is not a mean bone in his body.  Wyatt loves everyone and is happy to meet new people and new dogs. He loves Sami to death. Doesn’t like to be away from her, unless he is sitting on top of me or Jennifer.  And I do mean sitting on top.

We have had a dog trainer over a few times. It has been a long time since we had a pup. Wyatt heels like a champion. Sits fantastically well. Stays very well. Still working on his down and recall.

For some reason he hates school buses. The other morning one drove by and he bolted and snapped his pinch collar. Wyatt is ridiculously fast. He caught up to the school bus. Luckily the bus driver heard me and stopped so I could collect him. I was shaking the rest of the day. We now do all runs and walks with 2 collars, both attached to the leash, so that won’t happen again.

There are the usual puppy type issues. He mouths a lot, but is getting better.  He puts everything in the world in his mouth and eats all the sticks and leaves etc that blow in the yard.

Wyatt is so tall Sami will scoot under him occasionally.  He is so long that the coat we had for Eli fit him but now is a bit short.  He is so tall he can counter surf and not have to stand on his hind legs.  He really doesn’t do that too much.

Wyatt does like to rip stuff up, his dog beds etc.  If he is crated during the day we don’t leave him anything in the crate but an old towel for his own safety.  At night he has a nice bed to go in the crate with him, but I can hear him if he is up to anything so that he is safe.

Wyatt is certainly a handful, but he is just a super boy. I don’t think we could love him anymore than we do.  Jennifer just adores him as do I and Sami.

Thank you both again for all your help.  If there is anything else you need please let me know.  I consider myself a volunteer of CAGSP Rescue now, so just let me know if there is anything I can do to help”.
