Remi - Rescuing An Unadoptable GSP From Shelter

Remi, a 10-month-old female German Shorthaired Pointer, sat in the animal shelter for nine days without being evaluated. Unfortunately, her history of altercations with other family dogs led to her being deemed unadoptable. While Remi is an adorable and loveable dog, being unadoptable in an overcrowded shelter, her future was bleak. In a unique twist, the owner who had previously surrendered Remi to the animal shelter later retrieved her and saved her from being euthanized.

Remi's owner had contacted California GSP Rescue after the first altercation when she had "attacked" one of the family's other dogs. This incident occurred when the dogs became overly excited about when the gardener was using the leafblower on the other side of the fence. While the owner successfully separated two female dogs, some underlying tension existed.

When California GSP Rescue received the request for assistance to rehome a GSP, a standard reply was sent requesting more information. Shortly after the rehoming process had begun, Remi had another encounter with one of the other dogs in the house. Out of desperation and concern for the safety of her children, the owner relinquished Remi to the local animal shelter, letting California GSP Rescue know.

The volunteers at California GSP Rescue watched the inventory of dogs at the animal shelter, waiting for Remi to appear, but she never appeared. Concerned, a volunteer sent Remi's owner a message to confirm the animal shelter and inquire about a shelter identification number. Upon realizing the grave situation at the animal shelter, Remi's owner was struck with the urgent need to rescue their beloved pet from imminent danger.

Never having evaluated Remi, the animal shelter inquired about the owner's plans. Upon learning that Remi would be going to a breed-specific rescue, the animal shelter made plans for the owner to retrieve Remi. Shortly after, Remi's owner picked her up and relinquished her to California GSP Rescue, where she would find a forever home without any other dogs. Remi was safe.

Remi's story is unique in that her owner truly cared for her, but the increased number of stray dogs in animal shelters is concerning, and dog lovers need to be made aware of the dangers. In 2023, we saw a concerning increase in the number of stray dogs, resulting in an unacceptable rise in euthanized dogs. As the need for rescue resources rises, realizing that education can make a significant difference is essential. At California GSP Rescue, we are fully committed to addressing this issue and believe that adoption is one of the best ways to help solve the immediate problem. By adopting a GSP, you can make a significant impact on the lives of the dogs at animal shelters. If you cannot adopt, please consider becoming a Rescue Hero and support our mission to rescue and educate.
