Maya Is adopted!
Karen is a two time repeat adopter, and reached out to us to adopt another to add to her family after sadly losing her beloved hiking and running buddy, Dulce. Karen was open to an older dog, but one that could accompany her on 5 to 7 mile runs a day, and be a companion for her 13 year old GSP, Cheyenne, and her 12 year old Min Pin Chihuahua mix, Lucy. Karen also needed a dog that would do well with her young grandchildren, so we wanted to make sure the dog we would consider for her had lived with young children.
We introduced her to Maya, a 3 year old beautiful Liver Roan GSP who was surrendered to us by her owner as they were relocating and couldn't take her with them. Maya was house trained, and had a bit of separation anxiety, but would be fine as long as she had people and other dogs to keep her company. She had lived with young children, and was very gentle with them. She was a sweetheart and perfect for Karen!
We are so grateful to Karen for coming back to us to adopt. We know that Maya has hit the jackpot the second time around, and we couldn’t be happier for all! We recently received an update from Karen that we wanted to share with you!
“I wanted to give you an update on Maya now known as Gracie.
I picked up this sweet girl Maya On November 6th from the amazing GSP Rescue of SoCal (you guys are inspiring).
She has been with me (and her fur sisters Lucy and Cheyenne) for just over a month but it feels like she has ALWAYS been here.
I renamed her Gracie, and she was quick to catch on (she’s very smart). Gracie, like most all GSP’s I’ve ever met, is highly intelligent, wants more than anything to please and has a high level of energy. Sometimes the energy gets in the way of being able to listen, obey and behave. I understand this because I have a lot of energy as well, and I am very easily distracted.
Even though Gracie is three and a half years old, she still needs LOTS of exercise and that suits me just fine. We run a minimum of 5 miles a day on the weekends, and we like to get up to 7-8 miles. Hikes are wonderful as well. Because I do run some of that energy out, she is able to relax and not be too hyper with her sisters, who are senior citizens and not interesting in rough play.
While every action she takes may not be perfect (because who among us really is PERFECT?), she is, in total, perfection.
She is so very sweet to the other dogs and to kids and grownups. She is so focused on pleasing me when I give a command, and she is amazingly loyal already to me. I am taking her to training lessons, as they help to cement the commands and hold us both accountable to practice every day.
I feel like I struck gold with Gracie, but as I have owned 3 other GSP’s in the past, I know that all the great qualities these dogs have are in large part prevalent in the breed. The one thing that I know and will always provide is that she MUST have exercise. Otherwise, she is frustrated and so am I. When you have a dog that is smart and is bred to exercise, OF COURSE they will misbehave if they don’t get exercise. I love to run half marathons. If you put me in a house and said “no exercise for you for a month”, I would misbehave!! I can’t expect anything different from my dog that is relying on me to meet her needs.
That said, just a BIG thank you to you all for making this possible and bringing this super loving dog in to my life. I owe you a debt I can not repay, but hope that you all understand that the work you do is making such a big difference to so many people AND dogs”
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Karen
