In Loving Memory Of Sage

Sage

For most, losing a dog is a very traumatic experience. Dealing with the grief from the loss can be difficult but walking and working with a rescue dog can be therapeutic. When Keith and Patricia contacted us twelve years ago, we understood their loss and desire to volunteer. Their love for Zuma was evident as they spoke of her and their loss. Over the next several weeks, they volunteered and walked many dogs before meeting Cherry, later known as Sage. The following is Keith and Patricia's memorial for Sage.

In 2009 our beloved 6-year-old GSP Zuma and I were playing frisbee at Dog Beach in Ocean Beach. She suffered an aneurysm and passed there. My wife and I were heartbroken. As therapy, we started to volunteer at California GSP rescue in September 2009. Soon we were introduced to three 4-month-old brothers and sisters that the rescue saved from the Carson shelter in LA. The female caught the eye of my wife and I, and we decided to adopt her. Her name was Cherry, but we decided to name her after the healing plant Sage.

Sage learned everything very quickly. Doggy door, crate (she would open it and go in on command), shaking, sitting, down-stay, you name it. She was the queen of the house and soon was sleeping on our bed between us. She was an amazing athlete and dazzled people at the La Mesa dog park. Above all, she was a prolific hunter. Rabbits had no match for her speed as well as poor morning doves. She was fascinated with lizards and would point at them upon seeing them. Her sweet demeanor was evident at all times with company or at Home Depot or the pet store. She loved her truck rides and always had to sit upfront. Sage loved Christmas and knew she was getting presents from us and grandma.

Sage was diagnosed with cancer in April 2021, and we had to say goodbye to her on July 9th, 2021. Patricia and I miss her more than there are stars in the sky. Our hearts are heavy, but we are so fortunate she shared her amazing life with us for 12 years. Thanks again to California GSP rescue for this gift you gave us. Thank you, Jan and Greg, for the most wonderful gift, Sage! We will adopt again from you.

Keith and Patricia

California GSP Rescue extends our heartfelt condolences to Keith and Patricia and we are so grateful for the twelve years they gave to Sage. Twelve years in a home where she was cared for and loved.
