Deuce Is Adopted!
Kristi and Christian applied to adopt a GSP as a companion for their 7 year old GSP, Layla after their 14 year old GSP, Emma sadly passed away. They applied for a young female to join their active family, but after speaking with them, we felt we had the perfect dog, however it was a male. Deuce was a young 1 year old GSP. Just a very happy and playful guy. Sweet as they come. He got along with everyone. Thankfully, Kristi and Christian were open to meeting Deuce, and it was an instant connection! We couldn’t have asked for more for Deuce. He is doing amazingly well, and enjoying his new life now as Beau.
The Story of Beau
“We fell in love with GSP’s with our first loyal and graceful girl Emma. Not surprising, four years later we welcomed home Layla, our energetic baby girl #2. Unfortunately, about a year ago we had to say goodbye to Emma after 13 amazing years. All of us, especially Layla, were incredibly heartbroken with the loss of our loyal friend. We knew another GSP was in our future, and thankfully we found CA GSP Rescue. Instantly we began borderline stalking the Facebook Page, reading, and watching videos of all the quirky, energetic, and unique potential companions for us and Layla on the site. We knew none of us were ready for a puppy, and had trepidation getting a dog through a breeder knowing how many amazing, adoptable dogs are available at the rescue, especially now post Covid. We filled out an application and within a couple days, got a call from Teri and began the process.
The interview and placement process were easy and made us appreciate the lengths the team goes through to make sure the rescue dogs are matched with the right owners and home environment. We only really had 1 hard requirement - our next dog must get along with Layla. We’ve only ever had female dogs and were instantly drawn to a few females on the site. Teri is a great listener and an even better match maker, really taking into consideration what we were seeking. When she suggested we meet a male dog named Deuce, even though we were a little apprehensive, we kept an open mind and had faith in Teri’s intuition.
We, (including Layla) first met Deuce via a stroll in front of the GSP rescue. At first impression, Deuce was a big boy. He was tall with a full tail, big paws, and dew claws, but quite skinny. Greg said he was estimated at around a year old. After a quick walk, we moved into a play area. After a bit of doggie handshakes (butt sniffing) Layla and Deuce instantly got comfortable. We got down to his level, and he crawled into my lap, tucked his head under my chin and released a big sigh. From that moment on, I knew he was staying with us. This big, goofy boy clearly just wanted to be loved.
Greg introduced us to another suitable dog, but needless to say the connection we had with Deuce was pretty instant and amazing. Going into our first visit, we were cautiously optimistic, and had promised ourselves we wouldn’t make a rash decision. We planned to come back for a 2nd visit to just confirm our choice was right for everyone. We purposely left the extra leash and collar at home as to not be tempted to jump into this relationship- it had to be right (not just cute).
It’s about an hour drive home, but within 15 mins of departing that first visit, we were already thinking about seeing him again. He really stole our hearts and Layla was keen to have a new playmate in the yard! Only 48 hours later we all returned to adopt Deuce. The doggie smiles on his adoption day pictures say it all! You can tell he instantly made himself at home in the back of the truck, wanting to be as close as possible to Layla.
Deuce has a new name, “Beauregard” as he seems like a formal chap. We call him Beau for short. Since coming home with us in February, our originally skinny boy has put on about 8 pounds (seems like all muscle) and is now close to 80 lbs.
Beau is a social butterfly. He loves everyone and every dog friend he meets. He just wants to curl up next to you and be wherever you are. He is our Velcro dog and our virtual shadow. Really all he wants is to be loved and held, which is why he greets us with snuggles and a smile all the time. We think about his “time on the streets” and how lonely he must have been for such a love bug. Beau now spends his days hunting lizards, chasing squirrels and traipsing through the creek in our backyard, but is also very content to lay on the floor in the sun next to us while we work from home in our office. He is astonishingly one of the most mellow GSP’s we have ever come across. We don’t take that for granted, especially given this breed. We are all very grateful for his laid-back nature.
Beau acclimated to the new routine quickly. The “3 days, 3 weeks, 3 month” acclimation timeline Greg shared with us was true! He crate trained well and sleeps/snores in it every night. He’s a big boy and takes up a lot of the bed so we didn’t want him sleeping with us, but pre- bedtime cuddles are a required nightly routine. Beau and Layla go on a run about 4 miles every afternoon which tires them out and makes for a relaxed evening, but tug toy wars are still inevitable.
We take Beau anywhere with us. He loves car rides, especially with his head out the window. He goes with us to the nursery, Starbucks, even the patio at the Brewery. Beau loves to greet everyone along his adventures. He is incredibly smart and with his size, he can get into lots of things.
He has trained us to remember to close every door and pick up valuable things within his reach, all of which is fair game for him. Randomly when we do leave things out on the counters, he’ll always bring them to us. thankfully un chewed, undisturbed- just slobbery. The response from us is always- “thank you Beau for letting us know we left the toothpaste (fill in the blank) on the counter.” His favorite thing to bring us is toilet paper… which we now keep in the bathroom drawers- with teeth mark dents and all – no shame here.
Because he was so big, we did the Embark DNA test. We thought he might be part Great Dane. Nope, we just have a big boy that is 85% GSP with Pointer and German Wirehaired Pointer making up the balance. I don’t see the GWP, but I feel like I can see a little Pointer in his squarish face. We even got 2 matches for siblings, one in the Bay Area and one in South Korea of all places.
We are so thankful to the CA GSP Rescue in connecting us with our beautiful and lovable Beau. He brings so much joy to our entire family every day”.
